Taco Azul means “Blue taco” and at the newest taco spot in the Beacon hill area you will find just that, blue tacos. If you love tacos you definitely want to check this place out ASAP. When Dine Out Boston’s winter series was announced and I was checking out the participating restaurants for this year, Taco Azul stood out to me immediately. I’m always looking for the new and unique non chain restaurants with phenomenal reviews. So Taco Azul was number one for me to try. My boyfriend and I luckily got to go here for a Friday night date night and what better way to try a new restaurant than doing it with a 3 course meal for $36! And let me tell you guys we were not disappointed.
Ambiance
First off this restaurant is located in the old Emory Building in Beacon hill. It’s a stunning building with a beautiful blue Taco Azul sign listing their specialties, “Guac. Taco. Margs”. Now that is music to my ears when I think of a Mexican spot, and I definitely want all three and then some. Upon entering the restaurant, first I noticed the Bad Bunny music playing which is an immediate YES from me as he is one of my favorite artists but I was also blown away with the décor. The color blue is most definitely the main character of this space, I mean it is called blue taco! I may be biased but blue happens to be my favorite color too. There is blue seating and white washed walls and beautiful wooden tables. To the left there is an open kitchen concept with bar seating to watch the chefs hard at work to deliver incredible tacos. Straight ahead there is the main bar area with shelves of tequilas on the wall. Beautiful light fixtures hang from above. The décor and vibe of this restaurant really is truly unique. I kept saying to my boyfriend, “it’s so cute in here”. I love a good restaurant with cute vibes and they delivered. And again I will say the Bad Bunny on the speaker was keeping the vibes high and making me dance in my seat.
Apps
Now, doing the Dine Out menu, we both obviously opted for the infamous chips and guacamole. Not these aren’t your normal chips and guac but they are BLUE chips and guac. And holy guacamole were they good. Guac being one of the restaurant's staples they sure did deliver the best chips and guac I’ve ever had. The blue chips tasted so fresh, not oily or greasy at all and so much flavor that you could eat them by themselves. The guac has such a unique flavor too, it was a peppery taste which I’m not used to with guac but it was incredible and I wish I had the recipe. Other apps on the menu included chips and queso, Mexican corn and rice and beans.
Entrees
For entrees the restaurant offers tacos and quesadillas. That’s all you need! Doing the dine out we got to choose 3 of almost any of the tacos on the menu. Between my boyfriend and I, we chose the beef birria, skirt steak, crispy fish, chipotle chicken and crispy avocado. Of course each taco was served on a beautiful blue tortilla. The beef birria was so flavorful and tender that you don’t even need consume to dip it in. This one was my favorite by far. The crispy fish was an easy runner up for me. The coating of the fish was so light and crunchy I wish I had 7 of these tacos. My boyfriend was blown away by the skirt steak taco, the whole time it took him to eat it he kept “mmmm” -ing with each bite. He also kept saying the crispy avocado was a standout to him as he’s never had a fried avocado taco before but wishes he had! I was jealous that I didn’t order the steak or the avocado but oh well looks like I have to go back again to try those ones!
They also feature a “smiling taco” which is a rotating seasonal taco where 10% of all proceeds are donated to a local cause. This was not part of the dine out menu so we did not order this one but I am always so blown away and appreciative of a restaurant who likes to give back to the community. This alone puts them as a standout restaurant with truly great people behind it. I will definitely be getting multiple of these in the future!
Desserts
Last but not least for the deserts. Churros and chocolate. UNBELIEVABLE. You would think this was one of their specialties. It was that good!! For some reason my boyfriend has never had a churro, weird I know, but he couldn’t stop eating them. They were light and in onion ring shape with the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar. The chocolate sauce was delicate and thin but rich with flavor at the same time. I would go back just for these churros for dessert with a marg. Easily my favorite churros in the city now.
Service
Service was on point. We had a quick meal as we were having a sober night with Mexican coca colas, sadly no margs, but until next time! Seriously though, everything truly came out speedy fast after ordering each course. Our server stopped by just enough but not too many times where you are trying to chew your food and they ask you how your meal is mid bite. She was also so pleasant, cheerful and super knowledgeable on the menu and any questions I had on ingredients. I had a view of the bar from where I was sitting also and I was watching the bartender sling margaritas out left and right in record timing. You definitely won’t have to worry about waiting long for your drinks!
Overall Experience
5/5
This place was WOW. It is truly now one of my new favorites in Boston. Like I mentioned previously I love a good small unique restaurant that you can tell really focuses on the menu, food, drinks and vibes. The owner Dan Leyva knows what he is doing. Boston needed a new taco spot and this now is my new go to for when I’m wanting a taco and a margarita. I can’t wait to tell all my friends about this and take more people here! Make sure to add this to your Boston foodie list, I’m so happy I got to cross it off on mine!
